Benefits of Team Sports

Investing in a new, functional playing field at McKegney Green is an investment in the children of our community.

Playing team sports has a variety of benefits besides physical fitness such as:

  • Respect for coaches, officials, teammates and opponents
  • Resilience through sharing positive and negative experiences
  • Friendship and camaraderie
  • Cooperation and teamwork skills
  • Leadership skills
  • Self-esteem
  • A sense of belonging
  • Social interaction skills
  • Self-discipline, patience and persistence

Several studies have demonstrated the value of team sports off the field.  Children who play team sports tend to do better in school.  They are able to develop critical decision making skills from the numerous situations that arise during game or practice.  Kids who play sports such as soccer, are less likely to feel isolated.  They form connections with their teammates and are able to build relationships with adults through a trusted coach.  The hours of fun and sport on the field translates well beyond the grass.
